Driving Cash for Cool-Aid

Despite a scorching sun that threatened to turn asphalt into glue, a steady stream of contributors joined WVIR-TV Channel 29’s Dave Rogers, celebrity guests and a host of volunteers from United Bank and JABA on July 21 for a Drive Thru for Cool-Aid fundraiser.

The day-long event, held at Charlottesville’s Barracks Road shopping center, featured live broadcasts throughout the morning hours. Among the many guests on hand to help raise much needed funds were: Rev Dan Carlton, Spring Hill Baptist Church; Dr John Hong, Charlottesville Endocrine Consultant; Jack Buckley, VP, United Bank; Dayton Haugh, Rescue Chief, Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad; Rich Bard, Assistant Manager, UVA Department of Intramural Recreational Sports; Jerel Jacobs, Soul Revision; Terri Allard; and Delegate David Toscano,.

Federal Realty Investment Trust and United Bank were JABA’s generous partners for the event. Thank you!

You can still help make the heat bearable by providing cooling equipment to low-income people of all ages who are medically endangered by the heat. Charge your donation on line or contact JABA at (434) 817-5222.

Star Ratings for Nursing Homes

For most of us, choosing a nursing home is a scary thought. Now a federal agency is working to make finding the right home a little less overwhelming. Beginning in December, consumers will be able to view a star rating system for nursing homes that are Medicare and Medicaid certified. Ratings will range from a low of one star to a high of five stars.

You can read the complete Star Rating story here

Chillin and Grillin a Success!

The music was cool and the grill was fired up for Grillin and Chillin for Cool-Aid, Thursday, June 26 at JABA’s Hillsdale Drive center in Charlottesville.

Special thanks go to the many generous volunteers who made the evening a success, including:

  • Les Sinclair of Z95.1 who kept the party rolling as host and for his tireless promotion;
  • Jerel Jacobs and Lester Jackson of the Acoustic Groove Trio who provided oh-so-sweet melodies;
  • Bennie Dodd and friends who had the garden rocking;
  • Jane Foy of WINA-AM for all her support.

As well as the Cash-in-for-Cool-Aid silent auction donors and the numerous others who gave of their time, talent and money.

Fundraising Continues

With the early heat this year, the need for cooling assistance is greater than ever. By the time the evening’s festivities had begun, JABA had already given out as many air conditioners as in all of the 2007 cooling season. If summer temperatures continue to climb, the Cool-Aid team predicts a need for 80 more AC units.

Donations benefit Cool-Aid, a program to Make Heat Bearable, which provides air conditioners and fans to members of the community of all ages, who meet certain low-income standards and are in need of cooling equipment due to health problems. To make a donation or for more information on Cool Aid or any JABA service call (434) 817-5222.

Jaba Honors Local Volunteers

During May JABA recognized its volunteers with celebrations at its Charlottesville, Greene, Louisa and Nelson centers. The highlight of each event was the presentation of a “big check” representing the value of the volunteers’ contribution to their community. For more on the good times, see our News page.

Beat the Heat with these Timely Tips

With temperatures reaching into the 90s, there’s no doubt summer is here, and with it the threat of life threatening heat related illnesses. Check out these simple precautions for staying cool and healthy this summer.

State Award For JABA Volunteer

Sally Mank is a familiar face to viewers of WCAV-TV’S Senior Moment, but it was her off-screen efforts that won her the Governor’s 2008 Volunteer Award for national service by an individual. Read the full story here.

New Caregivers Support Group

Each Wednesday afternoon between 1:00 and 2:15 pm a small group meets at the Hillsdale Drive offices of JABA. Each group member is caring for a seriously ill adult loved one. And each of the sessions is designed to help these caregivers effectively deal with the stressful demands of being on call 24/7.

Leading the group is Lori Richardson, a JABA volunteer and caregiver, with Jean Bourbeau, Manager of JABA’s Adult Activity and Health Center in Charlottesville. “We begin each meeting by talking about care giving,” explains Bourbeau. “Then the group shares the problems they’ve been having. Finally, depending on the group’s needs, our staff provides information to help members address those problems.”

The meetings are free and open to any caregiver. As a bonus, JABA provides free adult care at its center during the meeting. Attendees do not have to be enrolled in the center’s regular program. An information form needs to be completed the first time. For more information call JABA at (434) 817-5222.
