About Retirement Communities

Retirement Communities offer a range of housing options, from single family homes to high-rise apartments. Retirement communities provide either a purchase or lease option, and range from condominium-style ownership to monthly rental apartments. These communities, many of which have been constructed within the last ten years, usually offer some services and amenities, such as recreation facilities, meal preparation or congregate meals, housekeeping services, and laundry services. The cost of these services may or may not be included in the monthly fee. It is best to find out what services are available, and at what cost, before entering a retirement community.

About Continuing Care Retirement Communities

A Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) is a financially self-sufficient residential community for seniors that offers medical and nursing services in addition to independent living. CCRCs differ in the amount of health care they offer their residents.

Generally, they provide food, housing, medical services and nursing care, and assisted living for the remainder of the resident's life, frequently even after the person has exhausted all financial resources. It can be thought of as a form of self-insurance, spreading the risk of catastrophic health care costs among all residents in the CCRC so that no one will face financial ruin. Because of the guaranteed health care, this type of facility is usually the most expensive.

A Continuing Care Retirement Community generally charges two fees - a one-time entry fee followed by a monthly maintenance fee. An alternative used by some CCRCs is to offer a reduced entry fee which is accompanied by proportionally higher monthly fees.

Financial arrangements for services and health care choices may vary from facility to facility. For example, if nursing care is needed, there may be additional costs. CCRCs differ in the amount of health care they offer their residents, and some do not offer a health care guarantee through the end of life. Careful planning, coupled with wise shopping can make this form of housing and health care a successful alternative.
