Support

JABA is all about lending support to seniors in need of assistance. Whether that includes basic information, case management, insurance counseling, home delivered meals — or any of the many other available services — we want you to think of JABA as a source of support for you or your loved ones. Most of our support is offered as a gift to those who cannot pay. See individual programs for more details.

Give

JABA is able to do all that it does because of generous volunteers and donors. We value contributions of time as well as dollars and promise to put your talents and your donations to very good use.

In the past five years, government funding has diminished. Luckily, individual and corporate contributions have begun to rise. Your assistance is greatly appreciated and needed.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEBIT CARD DEBUT AT CITY MARKET

This Saturday’s market will be first to accept debit cards—SNAP recipients to reap double rewards.

Charlottesville, VA (May 22, 2010)—- After several weeks delay, SNAP food stamp beneficiaries and debit card users will finally be able to use their cards at the Charlottesville City Farmers’ Market beginning this Saturday, May 22.

Earlier this week, JABA received the debit card machine needed for the program. The nonprofit will have the machine in place at the market on Saturday. The machine was backordered due to large demand from farmers’ markets across the nation.

“We are especially pleased to have finally received the debit machine because of a grant from the Wholesome Wave Foundation that provides double vouchers for SNAP recipients,” explains Judy Berger, community nutrition manager with JABA. “This means we will be able to give local people on food stamps up to $10 in additional tokens per day when they use their SNAP cards at the market. The grant pays double benefits, putting more healthy local produce on the tables of those who can least afford it and bringing extra dollars to local farmers.”

JABA received the grant from Wholesome Wave Foundation that is making the program possible last year and has partnered with the city to make fresh, local foods available to all individuals of all income levels.  JABA believes that good nutrition is key to healthy aging.

Program Details:

  • Debit card/SNAP card holder can swipe their card at Farmers’ the Market tent to receive tokens good at the market.

  • Debit card holders will receive tokens good for anything sold at market. In keeping with SNAP restrictions, SNAP card holders receive tokens good for only non-prepared food items.

  • Thanks to grant from the Wholesome Wave Foundation, SNAP recipients will receive double voucher coupons allowing them to receive an additional dollar to spend for every $1 deducted from the card, for up to $10 extra per day.

  • Debit card holders can get change (cash) back from vendors, however SNAP recipients cannot.

The Charlottesville City Farmers’ Market runs from 7:00 AM to Noon, every Saturday, April through December. It is located at East Market and First Street, Charlottesville.
