Support

JABA is all about lending support to seniors in need of assistance. Whether that includes basic information, case management, insurance counseling, home delivered meals — or any of the many other available services — we want you to think of JABA as a source of support for you or your loved ones. Most of our support is offered as a gift to those who cannot pay. See individual programs for more details.

Give

JABA is able to do all that it does because of generous volunteers and donors. We value contributions of time as well as dollars and promise to put your talents and your donations to very good use.

In the past five years, government funding has diminished. Luckily, individual and corporate contributions have begun to rise. Your assistance is greatly appreciated and needed.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SCAM ALERT FOR PEOPLE WITH MEDICARE

Con artists use new Medicare Part D rebate checks as bait—don’t bite!

Charlottesville, VA—- Seniors have long been a favorite target for telephone scam artists. Their latest hook is the $250 rebate check being sent to those enrolled in Medicare Part D.

About the Rebate

In mid-June, Medicare will start sending $250 rebate checks to people enrolled in the Medicare prescription drug program (Medicare Part D) when they reach the coverage gap or “doughnut hole”. Reaching the coverage gap is the point when participants start paying full price for their prescription drugs, after receiving Medicare discounts for several months. The $250 rebates for 2010 are the first step in a multi-year plan that will close the coverage gap entirely by 2020. The $250 rebate is a one-time benefit and people who qualify will only receive one check.

About the Scam

Rebate checks will be issued automatically about 45 days after Medicare Part D participants reach the coverage gap. No forms need to be filled out or phone calls made. Scammers call their potential victims offering to “help fill out” the nonexistent form, including Medicare, Social Security or bank account numbers. Potential victims are also being targeted by email and mail. The best way to respond to any of offer to help apply for a $250 Medicare Part D rebate is to hang up the phone, delete the email, toss the letter.

Those who believe their rebate checks have been delayed should call Medicare directly at 1-800-633-4227.

The $250 rebate will not be sent to people who get Extra Help with their prescriptions.  Extra Help is available to Medicare beneficiaries who meet certain income and resource limits.  For more information about qualifying for Extra Help, call JABA’s VICAP office at 434-817-5248.
