PREVENTION BEST DEFENSE FOR HEAT RELATED ILLS

“Hyperthermia’ is the medical term for heat-related illnesses,” explains Trish Higgins, Nurse Practioner with JABA’s Health Services. “These include heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The body’s natural defense against hyperthermia is sweat, which cools the body as it evaporates from the skin. If the heat is intense and long-lasting the body may lose its ability to self cool itself. A few simple precautions, however, can go a long way towards staying cool and healthy this summer.”

  • Drink plenty of liquids, even if not thirsty. Choose water or juice, not alcoholic or caffeinated beverages, which contribute to dehydration
  • Dress for the weather – preferably cool, loose cottons
  • Avoid physical activity during the hottest part of the day (10am – 2pm)
  • Seek shade, wear a hat or use an umbrella when outdoors
  • Avoid hot, heavy meals. Use the stove sparingly
  • If feeling overheated, sponge off with cool water and lie down in a cool, shaded place.

A number of health factors may increase the risk of hyperthermia, including poor circulation, chronic conditions or illnesses, certain medications, being overweight or underweight, and the aging process. The old and very young, as well as those with chronic medical conditions run the greatest risk. Homes or transportation lacking fans, air-conditioners or adequate ventilation exacerbate the problems. Low-income individuals in the community with a medical need who lack home cooling equipment are encouraged to apply to JABA Cool-Aid program.

Cool-Aid is a donor supported program. To make a donation to, or learn more about qualifying for Cool-Aid call JABA at (434) 817-5236.
