Home Delivered Meals
Home-delivered meals (HDM) are provided for older adults who are unable to prepare their own well-balanced meals either on a temporary or long-term basis. Often these individuals are recovering from a recent illness, surgery, or other condition which impairs their independence, creating a situation in which they become nutritionally at-risk at a time when proper nutrition is especially important.
Eligibility
Individuals who are 60 years of age or older, incapacitated due to accident, illness or frailty and have no one to prepare their meals may be eligible to participate in the home-delivered meals program. The target population is the nutritionally at-risk older adult who may be disabled, living alone, low-income (defined at 100%-150% of poverty) or over 75 years of age. Program staff make every effort to serve eligible adults who request home-delivered meals. In some areas, meal delivery may not be available immediately upon request due to program constraints.
What's On the Menu
Each meal usually includes the following components:
- 2-3 ounces of protein
- 1-2 servings of vegetable or fruit
- 1 slice of bread
- 1 cup of milk
- 1/2 cup of dessert
If a second meal is offered, it usually includes a sandwich, salad, milk, juice and dessert, but must, in combination with the main meal, contain 2/3 of the Recommended Daily Allowance for nutrients.
Meals are planned to meet the dietary guidelines of reduced sodium, fat and sugar, and increased fiber. Most meal programs offer ethnic meals, as well as simple diet modifications to limit simple sugars, salt and fat for individuals with diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Under a doctor's prescription, complex therapeutic diets may also be available.
Meal Fee
While there is no charge for the meals, participants are encouraged to contribute toward their meals on a voluntary, confidential basis. Meal programs suggest a per meal contribution, which varies from county to county. No one is denied a meal due to inability to contribute.
